Walking with Constable is a research project developed by Cambridge Digital Humanities in collaboration with the Fitzwilliam Museum and Cambridge University Libraries. It is exploring the challenges and opportunities that the digital transformation of archives and collections presents, and how we can respond to those in fresh and productive ways. John Constable’s connection with the countryside and intimate familiarity with rural life is evident in every aspect of his life and work. Through his own innovative approach, he provides us with an ideal opportunity to exploit the possibilities of digital tools and techniques, finding new perspectives and new ways to research. Instead of using the digital just as a form of distant reading, we use it to also enable a form of slow looking and close reading that embraces a physical connection to the place that made both the artist and his work.
